LeVonna Uekman
Cleburne County District Conservationist
Length of service: 20 years

LeVonna Uekman and her brother, Mark Kennedy, Missouri NRCS state grazing lands specialist.

LeVonna Uekman is passionate about rotational grazing management. The Cleburne County district conservationist, along with her husband, Tony, a soil conservation technician at the Augusta Field Service Center, turned their small farm into a grazing management showplace.“

By having my own farm available to use as a teaching tool, I am able to work one on one or with groups of producers in a hands-on environment,” said LeVonna. “Being able to show farmers how a grazing system works and its benefits has really increased the number of farmers willing to adopt managed intensive grazing.

”The Uekman’s farm features an electric fence system, water system and buffers while also incorporating wildlife areas. They raise cattle on the 80-acre property.

LeVonna also conducts pasture walks monthly during the summer on farms throughout the county. “The walks are very informal, farmer friendly meetings, where farmers can learn what works and what doesn’t work from other farmers,” she said. “As with most new technology, farmers need to see that it works before they feel comfortable and confident enough to adopt it. By having pasture walks, we have been able to increase the number of people willing to buy into the concept of rotational grazing and then many are successfully installing their own systems.”
