VILSACK ANNOUNCES FIRST WAVE OF USDA ECONOMIC STIMULUS FUNDINGHighlights efforts to stimulate economy, create jobs and assist rural communitiesWASHINGTON, March 10, 2009 – Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack today announced USDA will be delivering its first actions implementing the $28 billion provided in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Recovery Act). "President Obama responded extraordinarily to a crisis unlike any since the Great Depression and his efforts and that of the USDA will have a significant impact not only in rural communities but in communities across the country struggling with today's tough economic times," said Vilsack. "Implementation of programs in the act will help stimulate local economies, create jobs as well as protect and restore the environment."
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Recovery Act) was signed into law by President Obama Feb. 17, 2009. It is designed to jumpstart the Nation's economy, create or save millions of jobs and put a down payment on addressing long-neglected challenges so our country can thrive in the 21st century. The Act includes measures to modernize our nation's infrastructure, enhance energy independence, expand educational opportunities, preserve and improve affordable health care, provide tax relief, and protect those in greatest need. Additional USDA projects and funding will be announced in the future. More information about USDA's efforts regarding the Recovery Act is available at www.usda.gov/recovery.
