Grazing Management Workshop at Conway Oct. 4-5
LITTLE ROCK, Ark., Sept. 17, 2007 -- Livestock producers can learn how
controlled grazing can improve their profitability at this year’s “Grazing
Management Workshop” Oct. 4-5 at the Faulkner County Natural Resources Center in
Conway.The Arkansas Grazing Lands Coalition sponsors the program conducted by the
Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and the University of Arkansas,
Cooperative Extension Service (UofA, CES). Information on forages and livestock
management will be provided during the two-day workshop through classroom
sessions and field demonstrations on the Jim Tabley and Bill Wallace farms.
Sessions include:
- Dr. Ron Morrow, NRCS state grazing lands specialist, and Dr. John
Jennings, UofA, CES forage specialist, are the principal instructors. They
will discuss how grazing pastures more efficiently and applying fertilizer
more judiciously can improve farm sustainability.
- Dr. Ann Wells, animal health consultant, will explain how to keep
animals healthy and productive.
- Paul Casey of the Heifer Project Ranch will discuss rotationally grazing
sheep, goats and cattle.
- Mike and Susan Fisher will talk about how controlled grazing has helped
their dairy operation.
- Everyone will also get a chance to build electric fence with Ralph
Harris, NRCS agronomist.
- Claire Whiteside of NRCS will discuss alternative watering systems.
- Jennifer Hawkins, CES agent, and Greg Watkins, NRCS grazing lands
specialist, will explain services available from their agencies.
The workshop begins at 8:30 a.m. and adjourns by 4 p.m. after a farm visit each
afternoon. Free lunches and grazing sticks will be provided. Pre-registration
is requested to ensure enough food for everyone. To pre-register, call the
