Agriculture Secretary Vilsack Announces Major Initiative to Improve Health of Mississippi River Basin

$320 Million Available for Conservation Projects in Arkansas, Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, Tennessee and Wisconsin

LITTLE ROCK, September 24, 2009—Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack today announced a new initiative to improve water quality and the overall health of the Mississippi River Basin in taped remarks to the Gulf Hypoxia Task Force Meeting in Des Moines, Iowa.   The Mississippi River Basin Healthy Watersheds Initiative (MRBI) will provide approximately $320 million over the next four years for voluntary projects in priority watersheds located in Arkansas and 11 other key states. Participation in this initiative, which will be managed by USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), will be made available through a competitive process for potential partners at the local, State and national levels.

NRCS Awards Contract for Logan County Reservoir Repair Work

Recovery Act Assistance will Help Logan County in Arkansas

LITTLE ROCK, ARK., Sept. 2, 2009 – The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) in Arkansas awarded a $42,400 contract Aug. 18 for repairs to the Upper Petit Jean Watershed Site 9 in Logan County.

Federal Conservation Agency Begins Statewide Sign-up for the New Conservation Stewardship Program

Sign-Up Began Aug. 10, 2009

Little Rock, Ark., Aug. 12, 2009 — The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) will begin continuous sign-up for the new Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP) on August 10 in Arkansas. The first cutoff for ranking purposes is scheduled for Sept. 30, State Conservationist Kalven L. Trice announced today.

NRCS, White River Irrigation District Announce $1.38 million to Improve Water Quality in Arkansas

Deputy Secretary Merrigan Announces First National Sign-Up for New Conservation Stewardship Program

Continuous Enrollment for Producers Begins Aug. 10

Little Rock, Ark., Aug. 6, 2009 –Agriculture Deputy Secretary Kathleen Merrigan today announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) will begin continuous sign-up for the new Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP) on August 10 with the first signup period cutoff scheduled for September 30. CSP is a voluntary program that encourages agricultural and forestry producers to maintain existing conservation activities and adopt additional ones on their operations.

LITTLE ROCK, ARK., June 5, 2009 — Arkansas will receive more than $1.1 million for a new initiative to meet the Obama Administration’s promise to encourage more organic agriculture production.  Nationwide, $50 million is allocated to the program. Funding for the initiative is being made available as part of the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP).

Agriculture Secretary Vilsack Announces Eight Floodplain Easement Selections in Arkansas Through Recovery Act Funding

TERRE HAUTE, Ind., June 2, 2009 – Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack today selected 289 applications for the first national sign-up for floodplain easements under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009. The easements will cover more the 36,000 acres of land in 36 states. Eight easements were selected in Arkansas on 1,501 acres for $2,237,586.

NRCS Accepting Second Round of 2009 WHIP Applications through June 19, 2009

Little Rock, Ark., May 28, 2009 – Farmers and landowners in Arkansas have until June 19, 2009, to submit applications for a second round of sign ups to receive cost-share assistance to implement conservation activities through the Wildlife Habitat Incentives Program (WHIP) for the 2009 program year. Applicants can sign up at their local USDA/NRCS field service center.

Natural Resources Conservation Service Accepting Grassland Reserve Program Applications through May 29

Little Rock, AR, May 15, 2009 – Farmers and landowners in Arkansas have until May 29, 2009, to submit applications for the Grassland Reserve Program.  The signup is continuous, but all applications meeting the eligibility requirements that have been submitted by close of business May 29, will be ranked and considered for 2009 funding.  The program is for working grazing lands.  Land established in grass and enrolled in the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) that is set to expire within the next 12 months is also eligible.

NRCS Provides Technical and Financial Assistance to Landowners for Ice Storm Cleanup

Little Rock, Ark., April 30, 2009 – The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service is providing Arkansas landowners funding through the Emergency Watershed Protection (EWP) program for the removal of ice storm debris from stream channels and bridge structures caused by the Jan. 26-27 ice storm.

Agriculture Secretary Vilsack Announces $84.8 Million for Vital Watershed Projects

Recovery Act Assistance will Help Logan County in Arkansas

WASHINGTON, April 16, 2009 – Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack today announced that the USDA will be sending $84.8 million to state and local governments to improve water quality, increase water supply, decrease soil erosion, and improve fish and wildlife habitat in rural communities as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009.

Arkansas will receive $134,000 for repairs to the Upper Petit Jean Watershed Site No. 9 project. The 310-acre reservoir in Logan County provides flood control for 19,872 acres and water supply for the city of Booneville.

LITTLE ROCK, April 15, 2009 – Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced the U.S. Department of Agriculture is distributing $45 million in Recovery Act funds to rehabilitate aging flood control structures nationwide. These projects will help revitalize dams and rural economies by creating jobs and supporting local businesses that supply needed products and services.

Water Enhancement Program

WASHINGTON, March 26, 2009—U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (USDA-NRCS) has re-opened its Request for Proposals for the Agricultural Water Enhancement Program (AWEP), established in the new farm bill to promote ground and surface water conservation and water quality improvement, said Kalven L. State Technical Committee Meeting

Little Rock, Ark., March 24, 2009 – The State Technical Committee will meet April 13, 2009, at Farm Bureau, located at 10720 Kanis Road in Little Rock.  The meeting will begin at 10 a.m. in Conference Room A, and adjourn at 1 p.m.  Agenda items include Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) and Wildlife Habitat Incentives Program (WHIP) considerations and cost-share program payment schedules.  State Technical Committee meetings are open to the public.

USDA Will Restore and Protect Flood-Prone Lands Nationwide with Economic Recovery Funding

WASHINGTON, March 9, 2009 — U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) will provide up to $145 million to eligible landowners nationwide through the floodplain easement component of its Emergency Watershed Protection (EWP) Program, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced today. The funds will be used to restore an estimated 60,000 acres of frequently flooded land to its natural state and create jobs.

NRCS Extends Application Period for Conservation Innovation Grants to March 20
